About

Jatin Kumar

Hi! This is Jatin, originally from New Delhi, India and I am working as a tech recruiter for Japan's first tech unicorn, Mercari, Inc. I joined Mercari in April, 2018 when I read a news article about Mercari aiming to become a global company and looking to hire engineers across the globe for its Tokyo office. I felt it was a great opportunity to contribute in building a global engineering team and thus ended up applying.

What Career Advice Would You Recommend Job -Hunters?

As the startup ecosystem is flourishing in Japan, there are plenty of opportunities for new grads looking to work in a startup or startup-like environment. It is good to learn some Japanese to show that you are actually passionate about working in Japan. It could be helpful to attend popular startup events to make connections with the community. Many recruiters use platforms like LinkedIn to search candidates (even new grads) - a well presented LinkedIn profile can really help.

What are the Benificial Skills Needed To Work in Japan?

Adaptability

There are many challenges when you are working in a growing startup. One needs to produce results fast and at the same time develop systems and frameworks to ensure scalability in the process. Also the business requirements change really fast and one needs to adapt quickly to those changes. I understood that this is a phase and things will become stable as we scale up.

Proactive and Respect

In Japanese business, the phrase "customer is god" is taken very seriously. When working in a Japanese startup, always be clear about who your customer is and be proactive in suggesting ways to give them a better experience. It is good to learn some Japanese to show that you are actually passionate about working in Japan.

What does

a Recruiter do?

My work involves creating and executing sourcing strategies to hire best and diverse engineering talents from all over the world. This varies depending on the business needs. For instance, facilitating tech conference sponsorships to expand the talent pool, organizing in-house tech events for hiring and community building, scouting candidates and introducing them to Mercari/ engineering teams here as well as doing screening interviews and enhancing selection process.

Many startups in Japan (including Mercari) offer flexible working hours, casual dress code, sick leaves, lots of communication opportunities with co-workers and a non-hierarchical work environment, allowing anyone to state their opinions freely and in some cases take important business decisions.
