About

Nevin Madhukar K

Hello, my name’s Nevin. I came over from India in 2018 and it’s been a wonderful 1.5 years so far. I graduated from Kerala University SCT College, and I’m currently working for Fast Retailing as a Software Engineer. Like many of us out there, as a kid, I grew up watching and learning about Japanese culture. I think that the food, work ethic, and quality of life are among the best in the world, which added to my reasons for moving here.

What Career Advice Would You Recommend Job -Hunters?

Create Connections

Make good connections with people/industry that you want to work with. I would say, having a good resume and skillset is only 50% of the work. The other 50% is connections and maintaining good relationships. Attending international conferences, tech meetups and getting certifications also helps you stand out.

What are the Benificial Skills Needed To Work in Japan?

Language abilities

Knowing Japanese goes a long way here, as you can connect with the customers in ways others can’t. It definitely gives you an advantage. Knowing English and Japanese is quite the combination here at the moment. JLPT certification isn’t mandatory, but conversational skills can help you all the same.

Having a good sense of empathy

Also, understanding the customers and giving them solutions in a way that they haven’t thought about makes you stand out. Japanese are very polite, and they might not say if you do something wrong. They would ‘assume’ that you know it or/are expected to know it. To get to that level, having a good sense of empathy and thinking from others’ perspective can come in handy. Applying these principles in your work/job can help get you to where you want!

My job includes troubleshooting issues with coding or design, developing software solutions by studying information needs; studying systems flow, data usage, and work processes; investigating problem areas; improving operations through systems analysis; recommending changes in policies and lastly, assisting the development team throughout the process. Being an engineer requires to connect with people and these two advices are coming from my own experience.

What does

a Software Developer do?

Many of you must have heard of Uniqlo and GU. Fast Retailing owns both of these companies. The IT department for both retail companies fall under Fast Retailing. Currently, I work as a software engineer for Uniqlo.com and GU.com. I deal with projects that directly/indirectly deal with those websites. My responsibilities involve code reviews, providing solutions, designing architecture, mentoring freshers. On the side I do manage a fair share of responsibilities which deals with things outside of work, such as business lunches, movies, or casual meet-ups. Just to make sure we all get a bit of fun and socialize.

Working in

Fast Retailing

Even though Fast Retailing is a Japanese company, its work policies are slowly but surely turning into non-Japanese ones. “No need to work super late, but get your job done” – That’s kind of what we tend to follow here. If you feel uncomfortable and in need of a change, you are free to ask your manager and get it sorted out. As Yanai-san (President of Fast Retailing) said in one of the global conventions, our company is changing to adapt to the global work culture and openly accepting applications from everywhere.
